Survey Findings of the Impact of Artificial Intelligence on State and Local Employees

On June 16, 2025, the MissionSquare Research Institute released its report, Artificial Intelligence in the Workforce: A Survey of State and Local Employees. The Institute researched the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on public sector employees based on: 1) how they are using AI; 2) what services they provide; and 3) what concerns they have about their roles changing or being eliminated.

The key findings include:

  • 46% of respondents are currently using AI tools in their work, but only 17% use them on a daily basis;
  • 48% indicated that their department has attained a moderate or advanced level of AI implementation;
  • Over 50% reported that AI usage has improved work quality and productivity;
  • 42% feel they are more knowledgeable about their workplace use of AI as compared to their coworkers, but only 28% have been trained by their employer; and
  • More than 50% have little concern about significant retraining needs or the potential for AI to replace their job function while 20% are very or extremely concerned.

The report concludes, “As employers move beyond their preliminary use cases into more sophisticated applications, the need for training and review of the AI results will grow more acute.”
