NASRA Publishes Analysis of Public Retirement System Disability Incidence
On July 10, 2024, the National Association of State Retirement Administrators (NASRA) published its issue brief, Analysis of Public Retirement System Disability Incidence. In public retirement systems, disability benefits are intended to provide retirement income security for employees that are unable to work for an extended time period.
The analysis examines disability incidence based on: 1) occupational class; 2) disability eligibility criteria; and 3) disability plan design. By examining these factors, system stakeholders may attain a greater understanding of disability program outcomes and how various factors may affect those outcomes.
According to the brief, “certain characteristics of disability benefit plan design clearly are aligned with different rates of disability incidence, and understanding these distinctions and their potential impact may help systems contextualize their experiences and make informed comparisons.”
The brief also provides an appendix that lists the retirement systems and occupational classifications included in the analysis.
The brief is available here.
