EBRI Reports on Employment Trends of Americans Ages 55 and Older
Recently, the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) released its issue brief, Trends in Labor Force Participation and Employment of Americans Ages 55 or Older. According to the brief, U.S. individuals ages 55 and older in the labor force are increasingly becoming older and more diverse.
Other key findings include:
- The labor force participation rates of those ages 55-64 have exceeded their pre-pandemic levels, while those ages 65 and older have not reached those levels.
- Workers ages 65 and older comprise a larger amount of the ages 55 and older workforce, increasing from 23% in 2000 to 29.5% in 2023.
- In 2022 and 2023, the labor force participation rates of: 1) males ages 60-64 increased, but declined for those ages 75 and older; and 2) for females ages 55-59 and 70-74 also increased, but decreased for females ages 60-64.
- From 2000-2023, the portion of the U.S. labor force ages 55 and older that were Hispanic increased from 5.9% to 13.3% while those that were White Americans declined from 87.4% to 80.7%.
