Census Bureau Releases Findings from 2023 Public Employment and Payroll Survey

Recently, the U.S. Census Bureau released its report, Annual Survey of Public Employment & Payroll Summary Report: 2023. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the employment of U.S. state and local governments. The survey provides state and local government data on full-time and part-time employment, and gross monthly payroll by government function as of March 2023.

The U.S. Census Bureau released data indicating that U.S. state and local governments employed 19.6 million individuals as of March 2023. Of those, 14.2 million employees (72.6%) worked for local governments and 5.4 million (27.4%) worked for state governments. The majority worked in education (11.1 million), followed by those working in hospitals (1.1 million) and police protection (1.0 million). There were over 15.2 million full-time employees and 4.4 million part-time employees. 

As of March 2023, the total payroll for state and local government employees was reported to be $100.3 billion (up by 6.0% from 2022) with full-time payroll of $92.9 billion and part-time payroll of $7.4 billion.
